Bergen County Jail Roster Facility Overview

The Bergen County Jail is a direct supervision facility operated by the Bergen County Sheriff's Office. It has 1,140 beds and runs at roughly 90% occupancy on any given day. That means about 940 inmates are housed there at a time. The jail is one of the larger county facilities in New Jersey and serves all 70 municipalities in Bergen County.

The Bergen County Sheriff's Office employs more than 500 people across three divisions: Law Enforcement, Police Services, and Corrections. Of those, 268 officers work directly in the jail. The Bergen County Police department merged into the Sheriff's Office in 2015, which expanded its reach and resources. This merger brought patrol, investigations, and corrections under one agency for the entire county.

How to Search the Jail Roster Online

Bergen County offers a free online inmate lookup tool. This is the fastest way to check the jail roster. You do not need an account or login. The tool is available around the clock from any device with internet access.

To start, go to the Bergen County Inmate Lookup Tool. Enter a name, date of birth, or booking number into the search fields. There is also a checkbox to include released inmates in your results. Without that box checked, the jail roster only shows people who are currently in custody at the Bergen County Jail.

Search results from the jail roster display several pieces of information about each inmate.

  • Full name, date of birth, gender, and race
  • Booking number and SBI number
  • Facility name and custody status
  • Current charges and booking date with time

If you cannot find someone through the online jail roster, call the Bergen County Sheriff's Office at (201) 336-3500. Staff can help with records that may not appear in the system. Keep in mind that juvenile records are not publicly accessible through the jail roster or any other public channel.

Note: The online jail roster updates regularly, but there can be a short delay between a booking and when it appears in search results.

Requesting Jail Roster Records Through OPRA

New Jersey's Open Public Records Act allows anyone to request government records, including jail roster data from Bergen County. OPRA is governed by N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq. and applies to all county agencies. You do not need to give a reason for your request. Bergen County must respond within 7 business days of receiving it.

Bergen County has a 24-hour online portal for submitting OPRA requests. This is the easiest way to ask for jail roster records, booking logs, or other corrections data. The portal is shown in the image below.

You can also submit a Government Records Request Form by mail if you prefer not to use the online system.

OPRA requests can cover a range of jail roster records. You might ask for booking logs from a specific date, daily population reports, or details about a particular inmate's charges and custody history. The custodian of records will review your request and provide the documents or explain any exemptions that apply. If your request is denied, you can appeal to the Government Records Council at 1-866-850-0511.

Visitation and Inmate Services at Bergen County Jail

Bergen County Jail offers visitation for friends and family of inmates on the jail roster. All visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance through the GTL platform at VisitMe.com. Professional visits are available seven days a week from 7 AM to 9:30 PM. Sending money to an inmate on the Bergen County jail roster can be done through the GTL online portal or at lobby kiosks inside the facility. These funds go into the inmate's commissary account, which they use to purchase approved items. The GTL system handles all transactions and provides receipts for your records.

Bergen County Jail also runs programs for inmates aimed at reducing recidivism. These include mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, and re-entry preparation.
